This was an unfortunate event. Most of the devastation occurred form flooding and all the aftermath. I read through both articles. One main theme seems to be where the blame for things not going right should be placed. A lot of information seemed to not be full factual in most statements made. Some statements made to the media were vague leaving people to draw their own conclusions.
I think what could have been done better is making sure that all information was checked. Also, when communicating various issues, making the information more clear and concise. It just seemed that no one really had a straight answer to give. Media had many rumors that were greatly fueled by the fact that no official stayed on top of clearing the rumors up.
I think that the media should have been utilized better. The media is a way for communicating to all entities. So much could have been cleared up and done if the media wasn't used for a way to point fingers and fuel rumors.
That being said; so much was learned from these mistakes. I hope more is being done to improve communications and improve relationships with the media. I work for a business that has a special person that handles all aspects of the media to ensure appropriate information gets out there and in a timely manner. I would like to think all agencies are doing this.
